Community Legal Aid Society, Inc. (“CLASI”) is honoring the legacy of David Bulluck Brown, an exceptional advocate for equal access to justice and supporter of civil legal aid in Delaware. David passed away on January 22, 2024, at the age of 77.
David was a partner at the Delaware law firm Potter Anderson, where he served as a chair of the firm and of the firm’s Business Group. He was deeply involved in pro bono work and dedicated to expanding free legal services for people in need across Delaware.
In 1981, David co-founded Delaware Volunteer Legal Services (“DVLS”), an organization of volunteer attorneys who provide pro bono legal services to Delawareans in a range of civil legal matters. David served as Board President of DVLS from 1984 to 1996, then continued to serve as an active member of the Board of Directors. He also served as the Campaign Chair of the Delaware Combined Campaign for Justice, which raises funds to support Delaware’s three nonprofit civil legal aid agencies: CLASI, DVLS, and the Legal Services Corporation of Delaware (“LSCD”).
“David Brown was a champion for equal justice in Delaware,” says CLASI Executive Director Dan Atkins. “Throughout his career, David donated countless hours to pro bono causes and the legal aid agencies in Delaware. When I became executive director of CLASI in 2015, David welcomed me so warmly, and remained supportive throughout my tenure. I will miss seeing David at our fundraising events and talking with him about our shared passion for using the law to help marginalized people. David was brilliant, warm, curious, and engaged. He was a wonderful role model, lawyer, and citizen.”
David received many awards and honors in recognition of his service to the community, including the Delaware State Bar Association’s Christopher W. White Access to Justice Award, which is named for CLASI’s former executive director, as well as the Delaware Volunteer Legal Services Founder’s Award and the Potter Anderson & Corroon Pro Bono Award.
